OverviewIn Australia, food waste is a big problem, costing the economy about $20 billion each year. This means that around 7.3 million tonnes of food are wasted, which is about 300 kg per person or one out of every five bags of food. Food waste is also a major source of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. If food waste were a country, it would be the third-largest emitter of GHGs after the US and China. In Australia, food waste makes up more than five percent of the country's GHG emissions. To address this, the Australian Government has set a goal to halve food waste by 2030, in line with the UN Sustainable Development Goal 12.3. A roadmap has been created to achieve this goal, assigning specific roles and responsibilities to different sectors. According to the roadmap, over one-third of food waste happens at the household level, with most of it ending up in landfills. This presents an opportunity to raise awareness and change behaviors to reduce waste.
