He was raised with his six siblings on their farm in Thatcher, Utah. He graduated from Bear River High School and served an LDS mission to the Central States. He earned a bachelor degree in 1973 from Utah State University majoring in psychology and sociology. He earned a masters degree in counseling and guidance from Brigham Young University in 1975. In 1981 he received a doctorate degree in educational administration from Brigham Young University. He was a teacher and an administrator in the Church Educational System of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for thirty-four years. Dr Zollinger is retired and resides in Kaysville, Utah, with his wife, EvaKay. They are parents of seven children and twenty grandchildren (currently).
