OverviewIn order to determine the internal profitability of two breeding systems, semi-stabling and permanent stabling, a study was carried out to identify which of the two systems is more profitable than the other. The study revealed that the herds are managed irrationally, making it difficult to believe in their profitability. Mortality is very high in the study area, with over 50% of farmers reporting herd mortality rates in excess of 10%. Abortion rates are also higher in both systems, with 40% of permanent-stall cows having an abortion rate of over 5%, compared with 50% of semi-stall cows. The rate of profitability is higher for farmers using semi-stabling systems. 65% of semi-stable farmers recorded a positive rate of return, compared with 45% of permanent-stable farmers. An analysis of variance using the Independent Sample T-test showed significant differences between breeding systems for fertility rate.
