Overview

Putting Communication into Practice Before the 1970s in Australia, final year high school students with a flair for communication were commonly advised to be a cadet journalist or train as a teacher. An expanding economy and the government's strong expansion of the higher education sector enabled academics interested in communication study and teaching to develop education programs offering the graduates many new career options. Within the decade, communication courses Australia-wide equipped people with communication understandings and skills to pursue new careers consequential to human affairs and the nation's advancement--in advertising, broadcasting, business, film, government, journalism, nonprofits, public relations, teaching, writing, and emerging technologies, along with many other areas. Touching on social currents from the mid-1970s to the early 21st century, Communication & Beyond chronicles Rodney Miller's reflections on some people, principles, and practices responsible for advancing communication education in Australia, including - Impulses driving a new dawning of communication education. - Evolution of the premier communication courses at QUT. - National professional developments in study and teaching. - Experiences putting communication understandings into practice. Miller describes a key stage of pioneering efforts in the development of communication study and teaching in Australia, along with his experience of academic and external relations initiatives at QUT and beyond.

Communication & Beyond deserves inclusion in any collection strong in higher education, educator biographies, or Australian social innovative education processes. ...fosters bigger-picture thinking about the interactions between institutions of learning and the community...accessible and thought-provoking examination of human communication studies. - D. Donovan, Senior Reviewer, Midwest Book Review Communication & Beyond is like a time capsule offering invaluable glimpses into academic life in the late 1970s and 1980s at the Queensland Institute of Technology, and the formation of the vibrant academic mosaic that is the field of communication and media studies in Australia. From his viewpoint as founding editor of Australian Scan and later the Australian Journal of Communication, Rodney Miller shares his insights on the developments and key figures behind the development of the Australian Communication Association, and the efforts of an enthusiastic group of scholars to make their mark in a new exciting area of higher education in Australia. By offering his perspective on curriculum innovation at QIT, Rodney's book provides particular insights into how academics at QIT/QUT navigated the cross currents of ideas from the US and the UK, and existing cultural formations in Australia, shaping nascent efforts to define a distinctively Australian approach to an important area of teaching and research. - Steven Maras PhD, Associate Professor, Media and Communication, The University of Western Australia

Author Information

Rodney G. Miller writes about communication. He is published by the State University of New York Press, other universities, and The Royal Society of Queensland, with early writing published in The Australian newspaper. Collecting his provocative commentaries through three decades, Communication Essays offers insights and priorities to strengthen public discourse in a democracy and the interaction of an organization with the community--including ground-breaking study of institutional advancement leaders at some of the most successful universities in the world. His book, Australians Speak Out: Persuasive Language Styles, illustrates the persuasive strength of leaders who use ordinary words in extraordinary ways to make democracy thrive. It is the first detailed assessment of the public communication of these notable leaders from the 1890s to modern times. Communication & Beyond chronicles a new dawning of communication education in Australia that offered graduates new career options. For over a decade, Rodney Miller taught communication at Queensland University of Technology (QUT), founding and editing Australian Journal of Communication. He has since led external relations and the advancement of innovative education at QUT and universities in the United States and internationally, also consulting on communication, serving as adjunct faculty at Indiana University's center on philanthropy, and chairing or serving on the governing boards of educational, professional, and community organizations.
