He attended a plantation school until the 6th grade and graduated from Broad Street High School in Greenwood, Mississippi. After two years at Junior College in Morristown, Tennessee, he was drafted into the Air Force, serving at Forbes Air Force Base in Topeka, Kansas and in the Panama Canal Zone.
