Overview

Sid Halley, the ex-champion jockey turned investigator who appears in Odds Against and Whip Hand, is back and facing new dilemmas and dangers. The opening finds him having uncovered an obnoxious crime committed by a friend whom he, and everyone else, has held in affection bordering on love. On the morning set for the opening of the friend's trial, at which Sid is due to be called as a witness, other people's miseries explode and send him spinning into pulverizing days of hard, rational detection, and heart-searching torments. Richard Stanley Dick Francis CBE FRSL (31 October 1920 - 14 February 2010) was a British steeplechase jockey and crime writer, whose novels centre on horse racing in England. Tony Britton was born in Birmingham, England in 1924. A renowned classical actor, he has been cast in many stage productions including Gigi and My Fair Lady, as well as numerous Shakespeare roles. Britton's film credits include Sunday Bloody Sunday (1971) and The Day of the Jackal (1973). He has had lead television roles in Robin's Nest (1977) and Don't Wait Up (1983), and narrated many audiobooks throughout his career.
