Combatting Modern Slavery: A Global Perspective

Overview

This book is a compelling and urgent exploration of one of the most pressing human rights issues of our time. Through a comprehensive examination of the subject, the book serves as a rallying cry for individuals, organisations, and governments to confront and combat modern slavery in all its forms in line with SDG 8 and SDG 16. The subject matter of this book encompasses the complex web of exploitation that ensnares millions of individuals worldwide. The book commences with chapters delineating the pervasive nature of modern slavery in our society and expounding the various concepts within modern slavery, including their correlations and distinctions. Furthermore, the book offers a comprehensive legal and regulatory analysis of modern slavery, referencing pertinent international and national legal instruments, with a particular focus on the 3P paradigm outlined in the United Nations Protocol to Prevent, Suppress, and Punish Trafficking in Persons, Especially Women and Children, commonly known as the Palermo Protocol. Each of the Ps—prevention, protection, and prosecution—will be addressed in dedicated chapters. A fourth P, 'partnership,' has been incorporated, underlining the necessity of collaborative efforts among stakeholders to effectively combat modern slavery. The latter part of the book delves into potential solutions. It underscores the collective responsibility in tackling modern slavery, extending from businesses and consumers to governments and NGOs. The book also highlights the significance of distributive, procedural, and recognition justice principles in tackling this complex issue. Through the comprehensive exploration of these key topics, the book serves as a vital resource for individuals, organisations, and policymakers committed to addressing modern slavery and upholding human rights for all.
