"""I normally read academic books, but I couldn't put this down. I read it in two sittings. The characters and the fast-paced narrative challenge us to think about the many layers of trauma, how they play out in daily relationships, and more importantly how we respond to halt the cycles repeating. Mixed-race relationships are central, and the author prods us to think how these relationships complexly intersect with experiences of gender, mental health, sexual violence, and patriarchy. A quintessential white English mum may not want her daughter to marry a guy of Caribbean heritage, yet she is the one to challenge the widely held convention that rather than deal with his friend's sexual violence by making him an outcast and punishing him, his state of mind is more effectively dealt with through therapy. A complex and compelling read. -Bilkis Malek TransCulturalVisions"
