Colorado

Overview

In early 1865 Matthew Halsey returns to Texas from the war, which was still raging in the east. His found father's land was worthless, cattle were worth less, except those driven north to the rails. There was no money, anywhere. He takes his Choctaw adoptive brother, and his Apache sister-in-law, and heads for Colorado Territory with most of his remaining cattle and a new crew to a new land with a new promise. Texas, Indian territory, Kansas, and Colorado have bands of bushwhackers fleeing Union retribution for their crimes and Matthew cannot but help to run headlong into them. During the war, fighting such men, he had developed a speed with a six gun that was unheard of and his reputation was spreading. When they reach the ranch Halsey had staked out previously, he finds the men of the notorious bushwhacker Angus Clem in his cabin, trying to steal his land. That sets off a battle between hardened criminals and Matthew's ranch. During a lull in the fighting, Matthew marries a beautiful Cheyenne woman and his dreams of home and children are becoming a reality, if he can only get rid of the murderous Clem. As he was ordered to do in the Army, he hung Clem's bushwhackers where he found them and the air was filled with gunsmoke. The confrontation with Clem finally ends in a thunder of guns
