OverviewRectal cancer is the medical term for cancer of the rectum, while colon cancer is the term used to refer to cancer of the colon. The term colorectal cancer refers to cancers of the colon, gastrointestinal system, or rectal lymph nodes together. Adenomatous polyps, which are a type of precancerous development, are the precursors to the majority of colorectal malignancies. Polyps (growths) may mutate and take on different forms if there are changes (abnormalities) in their cellular DNA. Unhealthy eating habits, binge drinking, smoking, inflammatory bowel disease running in the family, and a host of other characteristics are some of the risk factors for colorectal cancer.
