Overview

Max L. Carter spent 45 years in Quaker secondary and higher education, the last 25 at Guilford College, where he retired in 2015 as the William R. Rogers Director of Friends Center and Quaker Studies. This book reflects on the last 12 years of his work at Guilford, primarily in campus ministry. The volume is a sequel to his 2003 book College Spirit: Reflections on 25 Years in Campus Ministry. College Spirit II: Further Essays in Campus Ministry includes chapters on college issues, Quakerism, spirituality, Carter's work in Palestine and Israel, student work trip experiences, and miscellaneous reflections. Most of the essays are light-hearted, even while dealing with serious subjects. Max L. Carter was raised on an Indiana dairy farm in a largely Quaker community. His undergraduate work at Ball State University was in German and mathematics, and his graduate studies were in campus ministry at Earlham School of Religion and American religious history at Temple University, where he earned a Ph.D. During his educational career, he taught at the Friends School in Ramallah, Palestine; Earlham College in Richmond, Indiana; Friends Select School and Friends' Central School in Philadelphia; and Guilford College in Greensboro, North Carolina. Carter is married to Jane Deichler Carter, father to three children, and grandfather to seven. He is a recorded minister in the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) and resides in Greensboro, N.C.
