Table of ContentsReviewsAuthor InformationKotaro Suzumura is Professor of Public Economics at theInstitute of Economic Research, Hitotsubashi University since 1984.He is Director of the Competition Policy Research Center withinFair Trade Commission of Japan since 2003. Born in 1944, Suzumura graduated from Hitotsubashi University in1966 majoring in Economics. He received the Doctorial Degree inEconomics from the same institution in 1980. He has taught atvarious institutions including Kyoto University (1973-82), LondonSchool of Economics (1974-76), Stanford University (1979-80), andUniversity of Pennsylvania (1987). He was a Visiting Fellow at AllSouls College, Oxford University (1988), a Fulbright SeniorResearch Fellow at Harvard University (1993), and a Visiting FellowCommoner at Trinity College, Cambridge University (2001). He servedas the editor of the Journal of the Japanese and InternationalEconomies in 1992-94, and also of the Japanese Economic Review in1995-98. He was elected in 1990 to the Fellow of the EconometricSociety. He was the President of the Japanese Economic Association(1999-2000) as well as of the Society for Social Choice and Welfare(2000-2001). His major research areas are welfare economics, social choicetheory, and theoretical industrial organization. He received theNikkei Prize twice, once in 1984 for Rational Choice, CollectiveDecisions and Social Welfare, Cambridge University Press, 1983 andagain in 1988 for Economic Analysis of Industrial Policy, AcademicPress, 1988, which was jointly written with Motoshige Itoh,Kazuharu Kiyono, and Masahiro Okuno-Fujiwara. In 2004, he wasconferred the Medal with Purple Ribbon for his contributions totheoretical economics. In 2006, he received the Japan Academy Awardfor his contributions to welfare economics and social choicetheory. Since October 2006, Suzumura is the Vice President of theScience Council of Japan.
