Collaborating with the Enemy, Second Edition: How to Work with People You Don't Agree with or Like or Trust

Audio Format

Overview

In today's fractured world, collaboration is increasingly difficult yet more crucial than ever. Often, to get something done that really matters, we need to work with people we don't agree with, like, or trust. Drawing from thirty-plus years of experience working with leaders in over fifty countries, Adam Kahane shows why conventional collaboration--requiring harmony and agreement--is obsolete. Instead, he provides a groundbreaking approach that embraces discord, experimentation, and genuine cocreation. Kahane introduces three key stretches to navigate difficult collaborations: ● Stretch to embrace conflict and connection ● Stretch to experiment and learn ● Stretch to step into the game This substantially revised second edition adds multiple new chapters exploring how to work across deepening divides and with those we may never agree with. Using new case studies, a discussion guide, and frameworks for navigating permanent plurality in our polarized times, Kahane offers essential tools for transforming conflict into positive change.

Author Information

Adam Kahane has more than thirty years of experience in more than fifty countries working with thousands of leaders to transform social systems at all scales (organization, city, country, and globe). His work has addressed many of the most important challenges of our time, including racial oppression, violent conflict among warring groups, insecurity and inequity, drug problems, social unrest, unsustainable food systems, and climate change. Kahane is a bestselling author whose six books have sold nearly a quarter million copies collectively: Solving Tough Problems, Power and Love, Transformative Scenario Planning, Collaborating with the Enemy, Facilitating Breakthrough, and Everyday Habits for Transforming Systems. Juan Manuel Santos was president of Colombia from 2010 to 2018 and winner of the Nobel Peace Prize in 2016. Prior to becoming president Santos had a long career of public service in Colombia, including as minister of foreign trade, minister of finance and public credit, and minister of national defense. Santos prepared for these roles by attending the University of Kansas, through postgraduate studies at the London School of Economics and Harvard University, as a Fulbright Fellow at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, and in the Nieman Foundation for Journalism, Harvard University. While out of government he was a journalist as deputy editor at the newspaper El Tiempo. He currently is founder and chairman of the board Compaz Center of Resources for Peace, which works for the empowerment of victims, the consolidation of peace, the reduction of poverty and inequality, and the defense of the environment in Colombia and the planet. Always a fan of audiobooks, Laura English realized that she could combine her passions for acting and literature. (For thirty-two years she owned a beloved African Grey parrot, named Dean Koontz!) Working within two organizations that served the blind/low vision community provided her a segue into live and pre-recorded programming opportunities. After years of experience in the narration business, along with acting classes and audiobook-specific coaching, Laura launched her own company: Laura English VO at Evergreen Studio, in 2022. She is the lead audiobook consultant for two Connecticut self-publishing firms. She is also a skilled engineer and has delivered over 100 full-length postproduction titles for a prestigious indie studio. Although she loves to travel, Laura's favorite place is home. When not in the booth, she can be found outdoors; in a hammock, on her bike, in her kayak, or hiking with her three dogs. Mindfulness meditation keeps her sane. Chocolate makes her smile.
