Coherence Universalism Social Dynamics: Institutions, Civilizations, and the Coherence Crisis of Modernity

Overview

Coherence Universalism - Social Dynamics: Coherence Strategies, Institutional Design, and the Present Crisis Volume 6 of the Coherence Universalism Series - G. K. D. Rader - Heaven≡Earth Foundation, 2026 p>Why do institutions lose track of their own mission? Why does polarization become self-sustaining even when no one wants it? Why do societies that appear stable collapse suddenly? And what would institutions designed for coherence actually look like? This volume extends the Coherence Universalism framework to collective life - institutions, economies, cultures, and the dynamics that sustain or destroy them. It argues that social systems, like individual minds, maintain coherence under constraint, and that the failure modes of collective coherence are structurally isomorphic to the failure modes of individual coherence: the same local-global tension, the same self-deception mechanisms, the same cascade dynamics - operating at a different scale. The Social Coherence Functional. A five-component measure of collective integration: trust (the expectation that others will honor commitments), information quality (shared access to accurate representations of reality), coordination capacity (the ability to organize collective action), resilience (the capacity to absorb perturbation without regime change), and extraction (the degree to which some subsystems consume coherence produced by others). These five components interact dynamically, and their trajectory determines whether a society moves toward integration or collapse. Competing Attractor Basins. Five named social configurations - coherent, coercive-stability, fragmentation, extraction, and propaganda - each with characteristic dynamics, failure signatures, and early-warning indicators. Societies do not simply succeed or fail. They settle into attractor basins that can be self-sustaining even when dysfunctional, and transitioning between basins requires crossing structural barriers analogous to the ridge-crossing of individual therapeutic change. Polarization as Attractor State. A detailed formal analysis showing that polarization is not a communication failure but a self-sustaining dynamical configuration. When stress contracts the viable space of competing groups, each group's defensive simplification is experienced by the other as threat, triggering further contraction. The escalation is self-sustaining even when no actor desires it. Institutional Design Principles. Six operational requirements for institutions that maintain coherence under constraint: predictable update pathways, legibility before optimality, reversible error correction, distributed responsibility, slack provision, and conflict containment. These are derived from the framework's dynamics, not imposed as ideals. The Economic Coherence Appendix. Treats collective cognition as a factor of production and develops the concept of the cognitive dividend - the coherence-stabilizing feedback that occurs when economic systems invest in the conditions for shared understanding rather than extracting from them. Trauma Cascades. The mechanism by which individual trauma propagates through social systems into institutional lock-in: trauma produces defensive individuals, who create rigid narratives, which build rigid institutions, which generate further trauma. The downward coherence cascade is a positive feedback loop that the framework makes formally precise. Heaven≡Earth Foundation - heavenearthfoundation.org - 2026
