OverviewCoherence Universalism - Psychology: The Coherence Foundation of Psychological Life Volume 5 of the Coherence Universalism Series - G. K. D. Rader - Heaven≡Earth Foundation, 2026 What if every major school of psychology - cognitive, behavioral, psychodynamic, attachment, clinical - is describing a different dimension of a single underlying process? What if the ""common factors"" that make all effective therapies work are not a statistical artifact but evidence of a shared structural mechanism? This volume is the most empirically dense in the series. It argues that coherence - the integrated, constraint-satisfying organization of a system across its relevant domains and timescales - is the fundamental explanatory constraint underlying psychological life. Every canonical domain of psychology, from perception to identity, from emotion to moral reasoning, is shown to be a mechanism that either supports or undermines the maintenance of integrated self-regulation across time. The Meaning Map. The internal model by which psychological systems navigate their world - encompassing beliefs, emotions, somatic states, relational templates, and identity structures. The meaning map can be accurate or distorted, complete or full of gaps, flexible or rigid. Most psychological suffering traces to meaning-map distortion rather than to reality being bad. Inverse Entropic Stress (IES). The felt regulatory burden of maintaining a meaning map that is too rigid, too distorted, or too disconnected from reality. When IES is low, life feels manageable. When it is high, even small challenges overwhelm - not because the person is weak but because regulatory resources are already consumed maintaining a map under structural strain. The Local-Global Tension. The single most important concept in CU psychology. Every addiction, every pattern of avoidance, every self-deceptive justification is a solution to a local coherence problem that creates a global coherence problem. Understanding this tension is understanding why intelligent, well-intentioned people make choices that damage their own lives. Four Therapeutic Mechanisms. All effective psychological interventions work through some combination of four structural mechanisms: gradient restoration (making the direction of improvement perceptible again), topological repair (reintegrating material excluded through self-deception), basin escape (crossing the energy barrier out of a locally stable but globally degraded pattern), and slow-variable restructuring (transforming the deep identity structures that organize all faster dynamics). This taxonomy explains the Dodo bird verdict, therapeutic plateaus, and why the most transformative changes are the slowest. Self-Deception. The primary mechanism of psychological - and, as the Ethics volume shows, moral - failure. Not ignorance but the active exclusion of information from the meaning map. The paper develops the eight markers of self-deception, the self-deception trap (the mechanism that would catch the error is degraded by the error), and the structural connection between hidden coherence in physics and the unconscious in psychology. Identity, Attachment, and Development. Formal treatments of what makes a person the same person across time, how early relational experience shapes the architecture of the meaning map, and how developmental processes follow coherence gradients through a landscape of increasing complexity.
