Overview

Clobetasol propionate is used to treat itching, redness and swelling on the skin which occurs as a result of some skin diseases and infections. It exists in several forms such as foam, gel, ointment, spray, lotion and cream. It is a topical cotecorsteroid, meaning that it is a drug under the class coticorsteroids which is mainly applied on the skin. The use of Clobetasol is strictly for the affected parts of the body where the after effects of the skin infections are evident, and not on the infection itself. It is not to be used on closed or air tight areas like the underarm, groin and armpits because this can lead into over absorption into the blood which could result in other severe side effects. The use of Clobetasol for treatment in children is not advisable because it could lead to severe side effects as their bodies may not be able to process the drug and break it down properly. This is because their internal organs such as their kidneys and livers may not be developed enough to process the drug and properly break it down, hence, homeostasis (the regulation of the internal environment i.e the body) becomes difficult. It is not advisable to be used by pregnant women because it may get absorbed into the blood and in turn get to their babies which is not safe. The same goes for breastfeeding mothers, because their bodies may absorb the substance right into their blood and this would result in the drug getting into their breast milk which would be used to feed the baby. The only thing that can happen if the need for this drug is urgent is that the dose may be reduced or used in at very few occasions, as long as a large amount will not have the potential of getting absorbed into the blood. This bookguide is a treatment guide on clobetasol usage
