He obtained his Medical Degree at the University of Zaragoza School of Medicine (Spain) in 1980. He attained one Doctoral Degree at the University of Bologna School of Medicine (Italy) and a second one at the University of Zaragoza School of Medicine. He completed a 4 year Residency in Pediatrics at Zaragoza University Hospital. In 1985 he came to The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia with a Fulbright Scholarship, to train in Pediatric Neurology for 3 years, and at SCHC for 1 year. He is Board Certified in both medical specialties. In 1991, he initiated his academic career at SCHC, Temple University School of Medicine. He also received an Executive MBA from Temple University Fox School of Business in 1996. He has more than 200 publications in high impact journals, including original research, review articles, clinical cases, and book chapters. He has presented more than 300 abstracts to scientific meetings. He was co-editor and co-author of the book Clinical Neurosciences for Primary Care, published by the American Academy of Pediatrics in 2009. Currently he is the Editor-in-Chief of the journal Seminars in Pediatric Neurology. He has lectured extensively throughout the US, South America, Spain, Italy, and Egypt. His areas of research interest include epilepsy, neonatal seizures, perinatal asphyxia, mitochondria disorders, and autism. Some of the projects have been supported by intramural grants (SCHC Foundation, Drexel University) or extramural funding (National Institutes of Health). Dr Piatt is a native of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. After an undergraduate education at Swarthmore College, he earned his medical degree in 1979 at the University of Pennsylvania. Clinical training followed at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, Duke University Medical Center, and the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto. After a tour on active duty in the United States Army at Ft Lewis, Washington, in 1989 Dr Piatt joined the faculty of the Department of Neurosurgery at Oregon Health Sciences University in Portland, Oregon, and served as the pediatric neurosurgeon to Doernbecher Children's Hospital and the Portland Shriners' Hospital for Children. In 2000 he relocated to Philadelphia to become Chief of the Section of Neurosurgery at St Christopher's Hospital for Children, and in 2010 he took his current position in the Nemours Neuroscience Center at the A I duPont Hospital for Children in Wilmington, Delaware, where he is Chief of the Division of Neurosurgery. He holds an appointment as Professor of Neurological Surgery and Pediatrics at Thomas Jefferson University. Although his clinical activities span the entire scope of pediatric neurosurgery, his recent publications focus predominantly on hydrocephalus and the epidemiology of childhood craniospinal trauma. He recently earned a Master's in Applied Statistics to advance his research interests. He has edited two textbooks of pediatric neurology and neurosurgery. He is a member of the Medical Advisory Board of the Hydrocephalus Association. From 1998 through 2008 he served, first, as a member of the Steering Committee and, subsequently, as a member of the Executive Committee of the Section on Neurological Surgery in the American Academy of Pediatrics. He was Chair of the Section from 2004 through 2008. He and spouse Elizabeth Cosgriff live in Merion Station, Pennsylvania, with varying combinations of their 5 children.
