He and his team were responsible for South Africa's first test tube baby in 1984, and is world renowned for his - and his team's - work on male infertility. In 1999 the WHO in Geneva accepted the Tygerberg strict criteria on sperm morphology as international standard to be used worldwide in Andrology and IVF laboratories. Dr MH Botha is Head of the Unit for Gynaecological Oncology at Stellenbosch University and Tygerberg Academic Hospital. His career started in a mission hospital, after which he specialised in obstetrics and gynaecology. Dr Botha did further training in the field of gynaecological oncology in the United Kingdom and is a registered gynaecological oncologist.
