After graduating he worked for the British Constructional Steelwork Association in London. In 1969 he moved to Bristol University. There he was head of the Department of Civil Engineering and Dean of Engineering. He is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering and President of the Institution of Structural Engineers.
