OverviewThe leaves of Clerodendrum umbellatum are used in traditional medicine to treat intestinal helminthiasis, epilepsy, asthma, headaches, irregular menstruation, and dermatitis. The objective of this study was to test the efficacy of the aqueous extract of Clerodendrum umbellatum leaves against Schistosoma mansoni schistosomiasis in BALB-C mice. Infested male mice were treated orally with the aqueous extract at doses of 40, 80, 160, and 320 mg/kg. Treatment lasted 14 days (from the 60th day post-infestation to the 74th day). On the 60th day post-infestation, eggs were observed in the feces and liver, schistosomes in the blood vessels, a decrease in body weight, hepatomegaly and splenomegaly, as well as granulomas on histological sections of the liver. Treatment with the aqueous extract of Clerodendrum umbellatum leaves resulted in a reduction in the average egg load in the feces by 54.48% and in the liver by 22.74% in treated animals, as well as a significant decrease in the parasite load by 88.45%. Hepatomegaly and splenomegaly were reduced after treatment.
