His 29-year career at John Brown saw him teach an array of subjects that included business, law, tax and nonprofit accounting, communications, and ethics and economics. He is now a partner with the Balla & Naylor Law Firm, which provides immigration legal services. Following high school, he joined the U.S. Navy as a boatswain's mate. Serving in the Vietnam War for over two years, Balla then returned stateside, deciding to hitchhike across the United States and Mexico. He is a self-described educational experimenter and divergent thinker who was recognized as an outstanding teacher of the year in 2005. Mr. Balla earned a bachelor's degree in music composition from Southern Illinois University; a master's in music composition from Florida State University; an M.S. in financial services from The American College; and a J.D. from the University of Arkansas.
