OverviewThis study highlighted the issue of the relationship between bioethics, citizenship and nursing and sought to identify the bridges and barriers to the training of citizen nurses among teachers of deontology, professional legislation, ethics or bioethics in undergraduate nursing programmes in the city of São Paulo (Brazil) and in Portugal. It was understood that nurses must know who their clients are, the socio-cultural and economic interrelationships of the people they care for, and work towards their emancipation. At the research level, we can continue to study how these teachers can be prepared, what the knowledge gaps are, and what is the best way to teach in order to train critical and reflective professionals in the teaching of bioethics. At the educational level, we should work on bioethics as a cross-cutting theme throughout the curriculum, as well as on the attitude of teachers towards the construction of true citizenship, thus contributing to a transformation in both countries.
