Overview

This book focuses mainly on reproductive physiology and the essential clinical uses of synthetic reproductive hormones in female farm animals in the routine veterinary practice. It is well under stood that, the reproductive system of the female is under control of the neuro-endocrine system via the Hypothalamic-pituitary-gonads axis. The main reproductive hormones associated with ovarian cycling, pregnancy, and parturition are Estrogen, Progesterone, Oxytocin, Relaxin, Cortizone, PGF2α, pituitary and placenta gonadotropins (Hafez, 1993 and Khan, 2013). According to Arthur, et al (2001) and Cynthia and Kahn (2010), the factors that influence the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis secretions encompasses, species, breed, age, good balanced nutrition, viewing sexually attractive individual of opposite sex (male effect), weather (pleasant) especially in seasonal breeders, long day is favorable for mare. Short day is favorable for doe and ewe, favorable, comfortable and stress free environment, general health, body condition score (BCS) and Suckling.
