He started martial arts training with a Buddhist monk in 1941 at the age of 7. After his discharge from the Korean army, where he was a Master Sargeant, he was called to Malaysia by General Choi Hong-Hi, Korea's ambassador, to teach Taekwondo to members of the government party in Malaysia and subsequently to develop the first English textbook about Taekwondo.
