OverviewWhen AIDS was first identified, the Christian right immediately declared that this was God's punishment of promiscuous gays. But HIV and AIDS also spread amongst the heterosexual community and worked its devastating way through the African continent. HIV/AIDS now also poses a huge challenge to India, which has more than five million people living with HIV/AIDS. And yet The Vatican still condemns the use of contraceptives in any circumstances. Here a group of progressive Christians face the fundamental issues full on. Christians and Sexuality in the Time of AIDS seeks to explore issues of theology, sexuality and Christian ethics and includes contributions from Antoine Lion, Eric Fassin, Abdon Goudjo And Jean-Louis Vilde. He has spent most of his life as a Dominican based at the order’s Blackfriars base in Oxford, apart from his nine years as master of the order in Rome, but has always travelled widely, being in huge demand as a speaker. He was elevated to the rank of Cardinal by Pope Francis in December 2024. His books have been bestsellers, particularly I Call You Friends, Seven Last Words and What Is the Point of Being a Christian?, which won the 2007 Michael Ramsey Prize for theological writing. His appeal is ecumenical too, and he has lectured in Westminster Abbey, while his book Why Go to Church? included a foreword by Rowan Williams, who was then Archbishop of Canterbury. Lytta Basset is a Reformed Minister of Religion and Professor of Theology in Lausanne, Switzerland. This is her fifth book, but the first to be translated into English.
