"To find out what Jesus was really like and stood for we must turn to the Gospels. Here we discover that Thomas speaks from an entirely different perspective than Matthew, Mark, and Luke. Only John seems to convey the esoteric meaning of Jesus' teaching. Jesus clearly states that what his teaching is about is not to be experienced through the sense organs, or expressed mentally: ""I shall give you...what has never occurred to the human mind."" In this respect it is akin to Zen, with its emphasis on direct seeing rather than endless cognition."
