Christian History, Volume 1

Overview

Christian History, Volume 1: From the Apostolic Fathers to the Eve of the Reformation by Steven A. McKinion and Benjamin T. Quinn tells the story of the Christian church from its beginnings up to the eve of the Protestant Reformation. The authors situate the telling of church history within the orthodox beliefs and practices of the Great Tradition, expounding upon its four distinctives: scriptural, Christological, liturgical, and moral/ethical. Readers of Christian History, Volume 1 will learn about the ecumenical councils and the formation of the early Christian creeds, the rise of the imperial church, major theological shapers and political figures, the great schism between the west and the east, the origins of monasticism, and much more.

Reviews

""Far too many Christians are ignorant or misinformed about church history. Far too many church history textbooks don't help matters because they are too dense, too dry, and/or too distorted! Fortunately, this is not the case with this excellent resource from Steve McKinion and Benjamin Quinn. They offer a compelling, sympathetic, and (not for nothing) readable narrative that covers many of the eras and figures that are the least familiar to contemporary Christians."" --Nathan A. Finn, professor of faith and culture, North Greenville University ""Church history is the story of God's people reading the Scripture, confessing Christ, and engaging a broader culture. McKinion and Quinn provide great insights into each aspect of this story since the first century. The readability and insightful interactions with select primary sources allow the voices of the church's past to guide the narrative."" --Jason K. Lee, professor of theological studies, Cedarville University ""The church today is undergoing significant changes, making this an ideal time to reflect on our shared history. McKinion and Quinn offer more than a simple recounting of past events; they present a thoughtful synthesis of key theological themes and historical insights that is sure to edify anyone seeking a spiritually enriching overview of the Great Tradition. This book would make an excellent textbook for a church history course, and I am confident it will rekindle a love for Christ's church in readers."" --Stephen O. Presley, director of education and engagement and senior fellow for religion and public life, Center for Religion, Culture, and Democracy
