Overview

Hanserd Knollys was an important and leading figure of the early Calvinistic Baptist movement in Great Britain in the seventeenth century. His spiritual and pastoral journey began with the Church of England, followed by a brief time in Congregationalism, and finally landing with the Particular Baptists. Knollys was an educated Baptist clergyman, having graduated from Cambridge University, who published over twenty-five works in his lifetime. Zealous for the Lord, previously published by Barry Howson and Dennis Bustin, allows the reader to get a glimpse of the man and his thought. This book, Christ Exalted, allows the reader to penetrate deeper into his thought by reading some of his more pastoral works. In addition, Knollys was taken up with the signs of the times and eschatology. Consequently, the final chapter of this book includes a chapter on his eschatological thought taken from six of his works that address this subject.

I personally am deeply grateful for the exposure given to Hanserd Knollys and his thought. He suffered much for his conscientious commitment to biblical truth, demonstrated courage and love under the constant threat of oppression and even imprisonment, while maintaining faithfulness to his calling to preach the gospel. He is a living demonstration of the rigorous theological pilgrimage of the early Particular Baptists to an ecclesiological commitment suspected and even despised by their contemporaries. In addition, the zeal for evangelistic preaching of the gospel was of paramount importance to Knollys and should encourage us with his example prompted by an assurance arising from the sovereign grace of God in salvation. He has been too little known, but these publications are now providing a rich narrative that can edify all lovers of Christ and the gospel. --Tom J. Author Information

Barry H. Howson is the Academic Dean and Professor of Theology of Heritage Theological Seminary, Cambridge, Ontario, Canada. He graduated with a Master of Divinity from Central Baptist Seminary (1984), and with his MA (1996) and PhD (2000) in Church History at McGill University. He has been a professor at Heritage since 2001, primarily teaching in the areas of systematic theology, biblical theology, worldviews/apologetics, and church history. Since 1980 he has been involved in local church ministry as a youth pastor, lead pastor, and teaching pastor. He is currently lead pastor at Heritage Fellowship Baptist Church in Ancaster, Ontario. He is married to Sharon and has two daughters.
