Overview

This is a study of what attracts teenagers to the church and keeps them there. The author interviewd a number of teenagers and their parents from mainline Protestant, evangelical and Roman Catholic congregations. The book builds on the following elements: the story of how three churches are securing teens' commitment to a church-oriented sense of faith rooted in their Christian traditions; the voice of teens who are deeply commited, as well as those who opt out of the ""best case scenario"" churches; and the perceptions of parents in relation to spirituality, the church and religion. The result is a helpful description of the most effective ways that congregations and their parents can build a faith in early teens that is not anti-institutional and that helps them value the church as a place of identity, belonging and growth.
