He was born and raised on a dairy farm and spent his youth helping his father on the farm. He has worked as a motorcycle mechanic, motocross racer, and motorcycle shop owner, a Peace Corps volunteer in Lesotho, a pet shop worker, a Sheriff's deputy, and a newspaper reporter and editor.
