OverviewThe day after the epidemic broke out in Wuhan, Chinese people in France are already busy sending masks across borders and sharing media information; at the same time, a significant number of Chinese people are victims of racist attacks, insults and discrimination in France. Based on both quantitative and qualitative empirical data, this book reveals the new dynamics and interactions generated by the Covid-19 pandemic not only between different sub-groups of Chinese in France, but also between ethnic Chinese and their both countries: China and France. Mutual aid, local or transnational solidarity, inclusion initiatives, like any act of exclusion and hostility, invite you to question the essence of humanity in transnational settings, beyond the racialization of the Covid-19 virus. […] – Lona Defrasne in Revue française des affaires sociales, p. 255-257 (2024) ""In this book, the representation of Chinese people goes well beyond that of a population that faced and suffered discriminatory abuse while struggling with repressed daily life and health crises during the pandemic in France. This population is represented within the context of relatively successful solidarity, a population that dealt with it as a community, by campaigning against discrimination."" – Takayasu Goto in Journal of Chinese Overseas, p.257-260 (2024) ""Chinese in France is admirably comprehensive and provides fertile ground for future research. Students, scholars, and policymakers working within and beyond ethnic/diaspora studies, East Asian studies, European Studies, digital communication, public health, social work, and more would benefit enormously from the findings of this book."" – Sabrina Lin in Culture, Medicine, and Psychiatry (2025) Author InformationSimeng Wang is a sociologist and permanent research fellow at the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS) based in Paris.
