| OverviewChinchillas are small, crepuscular rodents native to the high Andes Mountains of South America, particularly regions of present-day Chile, Peru, Bolivia, and Argentina. These animals are adapted to arid, rocky environments at elevations ranging from 3,000 to 5,000 meters. Their natural habitats consist of rugged, steep terrains with sparse vegetation, where they dwell in crevices, burrows, or under rock formations for protection against predators and extreme weather. Two recognized species of chinchillas exist in the wild: Chinchilla lanigera (long-tailed chinchilla) and Chinchilla chinchilla (short-tailed chinchilla). Of the two, Chinchilla lanigera is the one most commonly domesticated and kept as a pet or in breeding colonies. Wild chinchillas live in colonies, or herds, which offer protection and social structure in their harsh environment. The Andes climate, characterized by low humidity, cold temperatures, and intense sunlight, has shaped chinchillas' physiology-most notably their extremely dense fur, which is among the thickest in the animal kingdom, with over 50 hairs growing from a single follicle. This fur insulates them against cold, yet renders them vulnerable to heat and moisture in captivity. Due to overhunting for their prized pelts and habitat destruction, wild chinchilla populations have sharply declined. Both species are listed as endangered or critically endangered in the wild, making conservation awareness critical.
