From 2007–12 he was based in Rome, Italy, at the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. Together with Sophal Ear he co-authored The Hungry Dragon: How China’s Resource Quest Is Reshaping the World (Routledge, 2013). He lives in Mobile, Alabama, with his wife.
