Overview

This book analyses China’s multidimensional rise in the context of the international political economy, drawing on Susan Strange’s concept of ""structural power."" Examining the sources of Chinese power along with its geopolitical, economic, and cultural reflections, the authors consider how China’s rise is linked with the incremental process of multipolarization in world politics. Providing a systematic, analytical, and empirically rich account of China's surge in the international political economy, this study will appeal to scholars, policy-makers, and students with interests in China studies, international political economy, and international relations.

Reviews

"""This book adapts Susan Strange’s framework of structural power to analyse China’s growing importance in the global political economy. Especially impressive is their treatment of China’s advancing footprint in the knowledge structure, which Strange would also have highlighted. Professors Gürcan and Donduran have made a welcome contribution which will be of interest to anyone concerned with the direction of world politics today."" Randall Germain, Department of Political Science, Carleton University ""This is an excellent account of China’s rise to become a global power, which offers an effective and innovative application of Susan Strange’s under-utilised concept of “structural power”. By integrating analysis of the different components of structural power, Gürcan and Donduran are able to offer a nuanced account of areas where China’s power has grown, the challenges it still faces, and the differentiated approaches which China’s leadership take to global affairs."" Tim Summers, The Chinese University of Hong Kong. Author of China’s Regions in an Era of Globalisation ""China on the Rise: The Transformation of Structural Power in the Era of Multipolarity"" offers an original perspective on the complexities of China's rise in the global political economy. Employing Susan Strange's structural power theory, Efe Can Gürcan and Can Donduran analyze China's ascent in security, production, finance, technology and international institutions. They contribute to a multifaceted understanding of China's influence on the global stage as well of its possible limits."" Matteo Dian, Associate Professor of International Relations and History of East Asia, University of Bologna. Author of New Regional Initiatives in China’s Foreign Policy ""This book is a timely addition to the study of China’s rise and is set to be a standard reference for scholars of international relations. It uniquely blends historical contexts and contemporary dynamics in providing comprehensive and critical analysis of the theoretic perspectives and issues related to China’s rise."" Niall Duggan, University College Cork. Author of Competition and Compromise among Chinese Actors in Africa: A Bureaucratic Politics Study of Chinese Foreign Policy Actors"
