Overview

This book describes the interesting reactions of children toward the compulsory teaching of English in the colonial/postcolonial context of Puerto Rico. It discusses how these children perceive the images of Latino characters embedded in the stories found in the textbooks used to teach English. Racism, bilingual education, national and cultural identity issues were brought up by the children and discussed through a critical lens. Dr. Santiago has worked as an ESL elementary, secondary and higher ED. teacher for the past 30 years in Cincinnati, Ohio, State College PA, and San Juan P.R. She has also traveled around the world holding conferences and giving workshops about her work in the U.S., England, Ireland, Peru, Ecuador, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, and Puerto Rico. She has published articles on the Use of Big Books, children's stories and an ESL book series for the elementary schools with the Santillana/Richmond Publishing Company. Teresita Santiago Rivera, Ph.D. is currently working at the University of Puerto Rico as an ESL (English as a Second Language) professor. She is a Catedratica Asociada at the UPR. She obtained her MA in the Teaching of English as a Second Language at the Interamerican University in San Juan Puerto Rico in 1990. She completed her doctoral degree in Curriculum and Instruction/ Language & Literacy at Penn State University in Pennsylvania in 2008.
