James Appel, MD holds a Bachelor of Arts in Theology from Southern Adventist University and a Doctor of Medicine from the Loma Linda University School of Medicine. He completed a three year residency in Family Practice at the Ventura County Medical Center in California. He has spent the last seven years as the only doctor at the Bere Adventist Hospital directly responsible for the health care of over 150,000 Chadians. It was in Chad that he was introduced to Islam and began studying the Qur'an and other books on Muslims. Coming from a long line of Christian Ministers and Missionaries, Dr. Appel grew up in an environment where thinking about and debating spirituality and religion was part of the family heritage. His Danish wife, Sarah, just gave birth to twins: a boy and a girl.
