OverviewThe essays published in this volume have been selected from over 50 papers presented at an international conference on Child Welfare and Social Action held at the University of Liverpool in July 1998. There is currently great academic and general interest in the question of child welfare. Recent historical work has done much to focus attention on changing conceptions of childhood and children's rights during the 19th and 20th centuries. This collection of essays address a variety of themes including the physical and sexual abuse of children, forced migration and the role of the welfare state. The essays are organized into four thematic sections, each representing a key field of research into the history of childhood and child welfare. The first section examines ""delinquency"", while the second focuses on ""child emigration"". Section three, ""Rethinking Philanthropy"", brings togther three essays that explore attempts to rethink the role of philanthropic effort in child welfare between the late 19th century and world War II. The final section, ""welfare"" states and child welfare"", focuses on the issue of state intervention in family life, and hence in child welfare, during the 20th century. The collection of 12 essays represent an important contribution to the understanding of child welfare and social action in the 19th and 20th centuries, challenging many assumptions about the history of childhood and child welfare policy.
