Originally from New York, she received her PhD in sociology from the University of Essex in the United Kingdom. Her areas of research interest are in sociology of law, childhood and the sociology of emotions. Currently, she lives in Shanghai with her four daughters, partner Erik and a Taiwanese street dog.
