RETIRED CHIEF - HARTFORD FIRE DEPARTMENT CEO of Teale Ink, Inc. 2015 Charles Teale, Sr. is a bona fide Hartford success story. Born and raised in the City of Hartford, Charles, through determined, consistent and persistent effort, became an important leader in one of the foundational institutions in the city. Charles began his career with the Hartford Fire Department in 1982. Over the next eighteen years he built a career which is unique in the history of the department. He was promoted through seven levels of responsibility and was named Chief in 2000. During this time he also earned an Associate's of Science degree in Fire Technology, a Bachelor of Science degree in Human Services and a Master of Public Administration degree. Charles holds a number of distinctions for his work with the Hartford Fire Department. He graduated from the Hartford Fire Department Training Academy with a 99.7 average, #1 in a class of 27. In 1987, when he was promoted to Lieutenant, it represented the shortest amount of time anyone in the department had to achieve this since the position of Lieutenant was created in 1909. It remains a record to this day. Prior to his retirement, he was one of 41 individuals nationwide to lead a Class 1 Fire Department among our nation's 38,000 departments. Charles has a reputation, developed throughout his career, for a leadership style which combines empathy for others with strong personal example. While maintaining an extremely demanding schedule and being a husband and father, Charles has made time for significant community service. On April 9, 2010, after serving for 28 years as a member of the Hartford Fire Department, 10 years as Chief, Chief Teale retired from the H.F.D and co-founded the organization, the Teale Ink, Inc. which provides many services and products including teaching students how to learn, understand and remember information. As of March 2015, more than 1,700 people have received presentations on this subject. Chief Teale currently serves as Chief Executive Officer of this organization.
