The role of Chief Master Sergeants has been in transition since the rank was created in 1958. Since its inception, there has been a continual push to increase the responsibilities and prestige of this rank. One can debate whether the perpetual push for greater standing has come from within the enlisted ranks or from the senior officers who lead the institution. Many agree the Air Force is the most technologically oriented of the armed services--the service where offices and enlisted personnel work together on a significantly more personal and familiar basis.
