OverviewSamuel Paynter Wilson (1858-1921) was an American writer born in Sussex County, Delaware, who later moved to Chicago where he married in 1890 and went on to have two daughters. He was the author of several works on the seamier side of Chicago life, including Chicago by Gaslight and The Story of Lena Murphy, the White Slave; The Lost Sisterhood. This work first published around 1910 and reprinted from the 16th edition which includes three illustrations, delves into Chicago's underbelly, uncovering the city's vice in all its forms, from prostitution to pawnbroking, gambling 'hells' and saloons, and much more. The author's hope is to offer readers a warning of the horrors lurking in the shadows behind the city's prosperous facade, and so help them from falling victim to the various dangers.
