OverviewScienceWiz(R) Chess, Once A Pawn A Time is a five-star-rated chess set that adds active learning to whimsical play. It should be your child's FIRST chess set. Recipient of the prestigious Modern Library Award. This beloved chess set includes two books. The first illustrated book teaches children of all ages the placement and moves of kings, queens, sliding castles and jumping horses. It is endearing. The most important thing about chess is to have fun! -- the author Patzi Stewart. The second book advances playing skills by exploring the strengths and weaknesses of each chess piece. This book should be approached incrementally, about 20 minutes at a time. The custom-designed, chess pieces match the illustrations in the books. This makes learning the moves much easier. The author, Patzi Stewart, taught youngsters from preschool through high school, in public and private schools and recreation centers throughout the San Francisco East Bay for over 15 years. I needed several home teaching products to help them along from week to week. This set is wonderul. The books are hillarious and the boys actually pick them up to read on their own. The books are really what makes this set......otherwise it's just a basic chess set. I do agree with previous reviews though....the picture on the box depicts cuter chess pieces. However, for hollow plastic chess pieces, not weighted at all, they are well made. Overall I was very happy with this product because the books were able to help explain rather complicated concepts (like ranks and files) to very young children and they now completely get it. They are even considering entering a chess tournament. I gave it the full 5 stars because it does what it sets out to do and is very clever. -- Amazon Reviewer Author InformationPatzi Stewart is a chess education specialist who taught chess in both the public and private schools.
