Wilkinson was born on the island of Nevis, an island that is located in the northern half of the West Indian chain of islands. When Mr. Wilkinson was a teenager, he migrated to St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands, where he completed his high school and undergraduate studies. Later, he completed his graduate studies in education at the University of Connecticut. Mr. Wilkinson started teaching at St. Thomas in 1972. Throughout his teaching career, he taught in the Virgin Islands public schools and became a secondary principal. He also served as an administrator in an adult evening school and as an adjunct instructor in education at the University of the Virgin Islands. During his teaching career, he received many awards from his supervisors and community organizations. Two of his most memorable accolades were Teacher of the Year, in 1975, and the Paul Harris Award, in 1998, from Rotary East. Over the past twenty-five years, Mr. Wilkinson has taught chess to hundreds of students and adults, organized several chess clubs, and has participated in many local and international chess tournaments. In 2002, Mr. Wilkinson played on the second board for the US Virgin Islands, in the World Chess Olympiad, in Bled, Slovania. In 2004, he played on the first board in the World Chess Olympiad in Mallorca, Spain, and again in 2006, he played first board, again for the US Virgin Islands, in Torin, Italy. He was again selected to represent the US Virgin Islands, in the World Chess Olympiad in Germany in 2008. Mr. Wilkinson is now a retired principal who is serving as a chess instructor in both private and public schools in St. Thomas.
