Overview

"The author, Captain Michael Dodd, grew up in Baltimore and spent many hours on the Chesapeake Bay throughout most of his life. His book outlines a fascinating exploration of 23 cities and towns on the Bay from a waterborne perspective. He and his wife, Maureen, motored the length of the Bay during the Covid year of 2020. This book describes their journey, and each chapter starts with a delightful historic outline of the port visited. Little tidbits of tantalizing facts are discovered and explored and make this book more than a simple travelogue. Who knew there was a German U-boat at the bottom of the Potomac River? Or that tiny Tangier Island, Virginia, in the central Bay, was a British resupply fort during the War of 1812? We all know that Francis Scott Key wrote the ""Star Bangled Banner"" while observing the bombardment of Ft. McHenry in Baltimore. But did you know that he was a temporary captive on a British ship when he watched the event unfold? The author's easy writing style makes this book attractive not only to yachtsmen and boaters of all stripes but to anyone with an interest in American history, as well. This book includes: * 23 ports of call * Detailed sights to see and historic places to visit * Describes entrance to each port * Offers suggestions for restaurants and shopping spots * Overnight visits to each port - with extra nights at Baltimore, Annapolis, Washington DC, Yorktown, and St. Michaels * Suggestions for marinas * Summary of historic events related to the Bay and its perspective in history"

Author Information

"Captain Michael J. Dodd grew up in the suburbs of the port city of Baltimore when it was a quiet southern town. His father, Bill Dodd, loved the water and introduced him to boating at a young age. The family often chartered a 38-foot Chris Craft motorboat in the summers to tour the Chesapeake Bay. Michael's father and his older brother would do the navigation and operate the vessel. Captain Dodd recalled, ""At age 8 if I was good, I was permitted to steer the boat under direct supervision.I paid attention and learned quickly. We slept onboard nightly under the silence of the clear Bay sky."" Captain Dodd never forgot those fond memories.Over the years he learned to sail and owned several sailboats with partners. He and his wife Maureen also enjoyed chartering power boats with their children and other couples. He eventually accumulated many hours at the helm of various sail and power vessels and decided to test for a US Coast Guard Captain's License. After passing the qualifying exam he was awarded a 50-ton license.Captain Dodd now owns a 1984 classic 61-foot Hatteras Cockpit Motor Yacht. He and Maureen can handle the boat themselves. It is this vessel, named Time Out, that they used to explore the Bay for this odyssey. You can contact Captain Dodd at: CaptMikeBayOdyssey@gmail.com"
