Overview

The picture of my equally ancient Jewish friend Hans at the exhibition In Memoriam about World War II murdered Jewish children brought me back to that one Sunday in 1943. I played with him when the Germans invaded the home of the Swabe family and Hans, his parents, and his brother we taken away. They died in the Sobibor extermination camp. I narrowly escaped the deportation and eventual death. As a child, I learned how to survive threatening situations and adapted to living with a strange family in the countryside as a city boy in wartime.
