OverviewThe picture of my equally ancient Jewish friend Hans at the exhibition In Memoriam about World War II murdered Jewish children brought me back to that one Sunday in 1943. I played with him when the Germans invaded the home of the Swabe family and Hans, his parents, and his brother we taken away. They died in the Sobibor extermination camp. I narrowly escaped the deportation and eventual death. As a child, I learned how to survive threatening situations and adapted to living with a strange family in the countryside as a city boy in wartime.
