Changing the Autistic Brain

Overview

Over the course of eleven years, my son was diagnosed with dysgraphia, ADD, extreme anxiety, and Asperger's syndrome. During this period, my son endured numerous hours of therapy and took myriad medications to treat the symptoms that accompany the disorders he was diagnosed as having. After many years of scrupulously following the recommendations of the various specialists who had assessed my son, it was obvious to me that not only did he not benefit from the treatments, his symptoms were exacerbated by the medications. The confusion, frustration, and despair I suffered compelled me to learn as much as possible about how the brain functions, and what causes it to dysfunction. After years of research I learned about a medication that had not previously been prescribed for my son, which treated the symptoms he seemed to have been plagued with for his entire life. Fortunately I was able to convince the psychiatrist, who was treating my son at that time, to prescribe the medication since it has so few adverse side-effects. The medication has certainly changed my son's life, and mine as well. This book chronicles the journey I took as I navigated my way through the world of neurobiology and psychology in an attempt to help my son function as a regular child. I encountered numerous pitfalls and disappointments in my travails, but was undeterred in my pursuit of a cure for my son. In fact, the barriers to my progress only served to strengthen my resolve. Through sheer tenacity and unconditional love for my son, I was able to end the dark journey. I hope that the knowledge that I gained will help people better understand the nonplussed realm of brain function. I decided to write this book to offer hope to all of the parents who are overcome by the same frustration, despair, and fear that gripped me for the better part of fourteen years. I hope that this book will shed some light on an extremely complex subject.
