Overview

The lectionary readings for the Lenten season offer a rich source of information and affirmation on our role as baptized disciples of Christ. Change Our Hearts uses these lectionary texts as a springboard to reflections on the meaning of our baptism and its implications for lifelong ministry. It celebrates the richness of our Catholic liturgy and tradition, encouraging readers to use the Lenten season as an opportunity to immerse themselves in thoughtful prayer, reflection, and practice. Each day features the lectionary citations for that day, a reflection on an aspect of the readings, and a closing prayer or practice. It emphasizes the major themes of Lent: fasting, prayer, almsgiving, conversion, discipleship tied into the heart of our baptism in Christ. Readers will also find a strong theme of social justice running through the book. Change Our Hearts is an excellent resource for general parish use. Each day features the lectionary citations for that day, a reflection on an aspect of the readings, and a closing prayer or practice. It is also an ideal book to use with RCIA candidates; by using this book with both parishioners and RCIA candidates, you will enable the entire faith community to join in reflection on the meaning of baptism and Christian discipleship in a challenging, inspired way.

Cooney shows himself well-informed about the history and theology of Lent and the Triduum but, even more importantly, well and deeply formed by these holy days. His writing is in equal measures lyrical and powerful as well as direct, unfussy, immediate, and practical.--Paul F. Ford, Ph.D., Professor of Theology and Liturgy, St. John Seminary, Camarillo, CA

Change Our Hearts delivers what it promises. In these spiritual meditations on the daily scriptures of Lent, you will see the connections between the preparation of catechumens and the repentance of Christians, and you will read challenging questions that are disturbingly practical. Do you really want a change of heart? Then this is your book for Lent. --Rev. Paul Turner, Pastor, liturgist, and author of What Am I Doing for Lent This Year? Rory Cooney's daily Lenten reflections, questions, and insights cut to the heart of the paschal mystery and call us to die to our well-worn comforts and compromises. These meditations are not for those looking for an easy journey through Lent; like the prophets of Scripture, Cooney's goal is not to be provocative for its own sake but to call us to live our baptismal promises for the sake of the world.--Diana Macalintal, Director of Worship, Diocese of San Jose, and co-founder of TeamRCIA.com Cooney shows himself well-informed about the history and theology of Lent and the Triduum but, even more importantly, well and deeply formed by these holy days.
