Cemeteries of Forgotten Souls

Overview

Cemeteries are more than a collection of grave markers and monuments: they are the whispers of past lives. Most memorialize the lives of people who were loved in life and mourned in death. But others usually hidden from view, or simply lost contain the mortal remains of those who were neither mourned in death nor valued by society. These are the cemeteries of lost souls, and this is their book.

Reviews

""It is remarkable how the author entwines historical facts into a fascinating narrative that gives a long-neglected subject a powerful new meaning."" Dr. Neil S. Hibler (Clinical Psychologist) ""As talented journalists often do, the author reveals an unknown story lying right beneath our feet - where, why, and how we bury the ""lost souls"" among us -- and spins a fascinating tale of history, culture, and changing social norms. Cemeteries of Lost Souls belongs in every collection of essential works about American society."" Peter Lovenheim, author of In the Neighborhood: The Search for Community on an American Street, One Sleepover at a Time and Gift Shop of Gratitude: A Journal to Explore the Journey of Your Life. ""An evocative and sensitive look at the resting places of lost souls. The author speaks for those whose voices were silenced due to abandonment, loss of identity, marginalization and the passage of time. Through his insightful exploration of these groups, they now speak from the grave. The author provides an engaging treatment of the plight of the groups he explores, and it is through this unfettered honesty that he gives them identity and what it means to be Human."" Christin J. Reische, Attorney (and cemetery explorer). ""A well-researched, delightfully narrated account of America's cultural dance with the dead. From backyard burials and opulent monuments to the graves of the abandoned and depraved, McDowell provides thoughtful and lighthearted accompaniment through time, tracing American history via the management of our dead. This book is for all history buffs, sociologists, death curious, and everyone who will one day die."" Erin Bishop, founder of Nightsong Doulas
