Overview

Catholics and Evangelicals struggle to understand one another. We have significant commonalities, and significant differences. This calls for conversations that are factual and respectful. These 14 lessons touch on key issues of interest to both (justification, Mary, Purgatory, Saints, etc.) to see what Catholic resources say and what the Bible says. Where it fits, this study uses the New American Bible, the RCC Bible for English readers..

Author Information

Dr. Bill Smallman trusted Christ as his Savior after being raised in a liturgical Protestant church. He began work as an aerospace design engineer after graduating from John Brown University and marrying Doris Klett whom he met in college. They shared a sense of God's calling to missions, so Bill attended the former Los Angeles Baptist Theological Seminary (M.Div. 1967) and they joined Baptist Mid-Missions in 1968. Now with a son and daughter, they served in Manaus, Amazonas, Brazil, all through the 1970s, teaching in the Baptist Seminary of the Amazon and planting a church in Manaus. Bill initiated the process of nationalizing that seminary which continues under Brazilian leadership. During their furloughs in the Chicago area Bill completed his M.A. in Communications - Intercultural Ministries at Wheaton Graduate School. Once Bill was invited to the administration of Baptist Mid-Missions, the family moved near Cleveland, Ohio, where they still live. Bill served as Candidate Administrator from 1980 to 2004, by then a Vice-President. He had completed the Doctor of Missiology degree (D.Miss.) at Trinity International University in 1985. He completed his time in the BMM office as Director of Global Training and retired at the end of 2009. He was also adjunct professor of Missiology at several independent Baptist colleges and seminaries. He has ministered in 27 nations around the world. Dr. Bill has also served on the faculty and board of Baptists for Israel Institute, a ministry begun within Baptist Mid-Missions, for over 30 years. Numerous publications include books based on class notes from years of teaching. Most of these are currently available on Amazon.com (some as Bill and some as William). He is now (2017) working on a series of Bible study books as resources for teachers of adult Bible classes, called TRUST Books, also on Amazon.Com, with eight volumes so far. He also wrote numerous articles, book reviews, and chapters in anthologies.
