Overview

Writing between 1878 and 1901, at the height of the industrial revolution and thirty years' after the first publication of Karl Marx's Communist Manifesto, His Holiness Leo XIII issued three encyclicals warning of the dangers of socialism, addressing the condition of the working class, and setting out an alternative vision for a true Christian Democracy. These three encyclicals form the basis of the Catholic approach to the modern political and economic landscape, and would inform the later writings of Pope St John Paul II. This edition brings together in a readable format all three encyclicals: Quod Apostolici Muneris (1878) - on the dangers of Socialism, Communism, and Nihilism and reasserts both the institution of Marriage and the Family and the individual right to own property. Rerum Novarum (1891) - also called 'the rights and duties of Capital and Labour' is perhaps the most famous work of Leo XIII; he addresses the poor conditions of the working class, supports the rights of Labour to form Unions, and rejects both socialism and unrestricted Capitalism. Gravis De Communi Re (1901) - Rounding out the trilogy of Encyclicals on Social teaching, Leo XIII addresses the proper interpretation of 'Christian Democracy.'
